Amy Turnbull

Amy Turnbull’s work encompasses a number of mediums including sculpture, drawing, installation, and collage. She works to push the sensibilities and boundaries of taste. Through differing methods, she constructs and implies the course of the narrative. Her work ranges from subtle provocations to outrageous incitement. The latter was confirmed through algorithms that censored her work online pointing to the thin line between what is deemed acceptable and that which is not to be shown in online public spaces.

Form and materiality are at the core of her work. She has been working with found imagery drawn from the disreputable worlds of retro soft-pornography and the kitsch glamour of advertising. Working in the tradition of critical photomontage: with obvious surrealism to the images, which are cheeky, ironic, and tongue in cheek; they hint at stories that she hopes the viewer will write. The language of the billboard and the magazine are stolen. The narrative plays out in the viewer's imagination through visual stimuli.
