Lecture: Andy Friend

Thurs 26 October 2023, 6pm at Firstsite

Following on from the Colchester Art Society Spring Lecture on Eric Ravilious, it is appropriate that we have invited Andy Friend to speak at the Autumn Lecture on his biography John Nash: The Landscape of Love and Solace.

John Nash was younger brother of Paul, a great friend of Ravilious, and influences of Ravilious can be seen in John Nash’s work. Nash was founding President of Colchester Art Society and a leading member for thirty years. Great friends with Cedric Morris, he lived in Essex for many years and taught at the Colchester School of Art.

Andy Friend’s biography accompanied a major 2021/2 retrospective of Nash’s work at the Towner Gallery, revealing many hitherto under-appreciated aspects of a career spanning six decades and many media, as well as the centrality of the artist’s extraordinary lifelong partnership with Christine Kuhlenthal.

This talk will explore how both joy and tragedy shaped his art, his personality and a profound love of the natural world.

The bar will be open at 5pm for drinks and the lecture will start at 6pm lasting approx. 1 hour including Q&A.
