Lesley Carruthers
I am a sculptor working mostly in aluminium. The pieces are created by experimenting with shapes in polystyrene until a concrete idea begins to take shape, then cast in a foundry. I work intuitively, without advance planning, allowing the pieces to evolve through the creative process, which is often unpredictable. I find East Anglia a particularly inspiring area to work, a place where, on a daily basis, one is acutely aware of the power and infinite variety of the natural environment. I am a keen sailor, and the influence of boats, the sea, and the marine landscape can often be traced in what I do, although my pieces are largely abstract. I hope that my work will cause people to pause, take a deep breath, and really be ‘in the moment’ even for only a brief space of time, before being swept up again by the demands of daily existence.
