Simon Carter

All my work begins with drawing. I draw most days along the coast near the studio and it is these A4 drawings that keep the process of painting in dialogue with the landscape. I don’t really want to explain to myself what happens in the studio: I start putting paint on the canvas and after a while the paint enters into some kind of conversation with the accumulating drawings and with me. I go back into the landscape knowing what I need to draw. None of it is about technique or finesse, it is more a matter of faith and perseverance.
