I am a self-taught amateur artist who, although having drawn and painted since a small child, was dissuaded from studying art by my school and family. After serving an apprenticeship as an engineering draughtsman with a heavy electrical manufacturing company, I eventually joined a company that produced electronic imaging devices and became an engineer developing production processes.
I mainly paint in watercolour and oils with a style best described as new surrealism. I paint for my own satisfaction but this has meant that, although my paintings have been selected by many open exhibitions in the past, they no longer satisfy most galleries needs for art work that is commercial or fashionable. Fortunately the Colchester Art Society has seen fit to select my work in recent times.
Notable past successes have been selection for the Royal Society of British Artists exhibitions at the Mall Galleries London in 1973, 1974 and 1983, Best in Show at the Eastern Open, Kings Lyn, 2005 and Best Oil Painting at the Essex Open, Beecroft Art Gallery, Westcliff, Southend 2009. I’ve also had paintings selected for the Essex Open at the new Beecroft Gallery at Southend in 2016 and this year.
