Christine Gonzalez
Christine Gonzalez was born in 1955 in London. She studied fine art at the Byam Shaw School of Art in London and a post grad at the Cyprus School of Art. Christine worked as a mural artist and a decorator.
My approach to painting has always been fluid. Painting and collage have been my chosen materials in equal measure through the years. I have constantly shifted my style of working from representational to abstraction. My influences have been many, from Stanley Spencer to British pop art, Frida Kahlo, Arshile Gorky. Outsider art has also influenced my approach to work, I found in it a raw honesty that challenged the art establishment. In 2022 I began experimenting with total abstraction, a bold move for me but one that I needed to do as I needed more freedom, more room for intuition. I am not fully aware of the subject until the work is finished and reflected upon. Most of the time I seem to have to go through the motions of painting and paint what I don't want. This process enables me to find out what it is that I actually want, layer upon layer, building up the surface by adding and subtracting as I go.
Christine Gonzalez is presently exhibiting her paintings on a permanent basis at the Clacton Art Gallery, Central Parade, Rosemary Road, Clacton-on-sea, CO15 lTF
