Ella Johnston

Ella Johnston works across painting, drawing, and sculpture, exploring how histories are written, erased, and rewritten. Rooted in drawing and expanded through paint, print, and sculptural forms, her practice examines the relationship between text, gesture, and memory, where marks function simultaneously as language and image. Using layered paint, ink, paper, fabric, and industrial materials, she creates contemporary palimpsests that investigate accumulation, revision, and the persistence of personal and collective narratives.

Ella studied at Chelsea College of Arts and The University of Essex and has exhibited throughout the country. She is a member of the 2024/25 The Other MA Alternative Art School cohort and the Turps Banana CC 2025/26 programme. Alongside her studio practice, Ella is a co-founder and Creative Director of Dunlin Press, an independent publishing and art project established in 2015.
