Biography

Born 1951 and grew up in Hertfordshire. Jane studied at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, 1970-1973, B.A. Hons Fine Art and English. After two years of teaching she started a career in publishing, firstly in London and then Suffolk where she moved to in 1987. By 1997 she had taken up painting and was working professionally from her home in Boxford, developing her skills in oils, watercolour, graphite and pastels. Her work, although based on the observed world (especially landscape and figure drawing) is largely abstract with bold colours and dynamic shapes and forms.

She has exhibited throughout the UK including the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Royal West of England Academy (Bristol), New English Art Club, Mall Galleries, Bankside Gallery and is an elected member of the Royal Watercolour Society.

Statement

“Years ago I came across a watercolour by John Sell Cotman, The Drop-Gate, Duncombe Park. The pleasing simplicity of the subject, palette and composition has stayed with me and no doubt influenced my work. A few years ago my daily walk took me past a newly installed picket fence, and I was taken by the clean paleness of the wood standing out against the tangle of dark growth. Sometime after this I painted Picket White.”
