Jane Ostler

Jane Ostler (b.1958) received her BA (Honours) First Class in Painting from Bath Academy of Art in 1980 and MA in Fine Art from Goldsmiths College, London in 1986.

Art Practice. Jane has been exhibited widely, including: 'Jane Ostler: Finding the Hand of Kindness', @firstsite, Colchester, Essex (2024-2025), and more.

Teaching. Art and Gallery Project Lead at Level Best Enterprises, Colchester, for 17 years. 2024: “Sunshine Coast,” an exhibition by Level Best Enterprises at @firstsite, Colchester, Essex of a 2014 train poster commission that explored the landscapes and iconography of the East Anglian region, referencing Clacton-on-Sea, Walton-on-the-Naze, Ardleigh and Frinton.

Writing. 1989: ‘Sophie Horton’, Exhibition Catalogue, Goldsmiths Gallery. 1989: ‘The Serpentine Illusion’, Building Design. Using a British Council Travel Bursary in 1991, "Painting in Plovdiv", featured in ‘Artist’s Newsletter’ and 'Artists Handbooks Across Europe' (1992), AN Publications, described a cross-cultural exchange between British and Bulgarian artists.

“I try to apply objectivity and critical distance to my work while allowing the emotion and softness that I am feeling to show.

I combine the found and ready-made with the abstract and the imaginative, while plundering historical references and the general geopolitical landscape of today.  I like to come back to drawing family and friends whenever I can.”
