I start a painting with a vague notion of what it might be, but the real endeavour is to push the painting into some sort of conversation with the landscape, and this mediated through the rapid A4 drawings I make on regular walks along the local seawalls. There is a lot that goes on in making a painting, but in the end, it really ought to convince me that it’s true.
