Sue Gascoyne

Sue Gascoyne is a socially engaged artist based in Colchester. Her current practice uses textiles, stitch, painting, mark-making, mixed media and interactive installations to explore identity, agency, trauma, safety and connections. Sue’s sensory-rich work has been showcased in the Beecroft Art Gallery, Southwark Park Gallery and The Minories as well as in art publications. Investigations with materiality inform Sue’s approach to interrogating difficult issues, with value and lines manifesting as ink, paint, stitch or wire; and composition, colour and form crafted through a language of stitch, natural dyes, embellishment and distortion.

Greatly influenced by her role as a mother and child psychotherapist, a strong environmental ethic and care are imbued throughout Sue’s work from the utilitarian cloth transformed through the domestic act of sewing, to the use of repurposed materials and a multi-layered process of creation and rebuilding. Much of Sue’s work, whether 2D, sculptures, installations or interactive performance, explore what it means to be human. Sue joined The Other MA (TOMA) alternative fine art school in 2024/25 and recently attended a residency in Portugal. She is a recipient of a Firstsite Collectors Bursary award. Sue is available for commissions, workshops, community engagement projects and therapeutic art sessions.
